The television schedule for the 2014 IndyCar Series season was announced today. ABC will carry 5 races including the season opening St. Petersburg Grand Prix as well as the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 10th and qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 on May 17th and 18th, leading into the Indianapolis 500 on May 25th making for the first time 3 major events of  the Month of May being shown on network television.

“With the debut of the Grand Prix of Indianapolis, the intensity of qualifications for the Indianapolis 500 and the ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing,’ ABC is the destination to tune in for our three big weekends of competition in May,” said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., the parent company of INDYCAR.

This gives some lead in programming to the Indianapolis 500, which has not happened in recent memory. Since 2009, NBC Sports Network has aired qualifying, practice and Carb Day were all aired on NBC Sports.

The final race shown on ABC will be the Detroit Doubleheader on May 31 and June 1.

Carb Day and the remaining races will be shown on the NBC Sports network starting with the 40th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and the Honda Grand Prix of Alabama and will pick up their coverage of the Firestone 600 on June 7th until the end of the season.
