Alonso ready to support Massa…’one of the best in the world’

Sure, Felipe Massa can drive a car but his struggles over the past few seasons have left many questioning that very notion…many, that is, except his teammate Fernando Alonso. Speaking to the press at Wrooom, Alonso says that Felipe is one of the best drivers in the world. In fact, Alonso says he’d happily support Massa should the Brazilian be leading in the points championship. AUTOSPORT has the story:

“Sure, it is not the first time I have helped him and surely it will not be the last,” Alonso said.

“We help each other continuously, for the good of Ferrari.

“Felipe is one of the best drivers in the world. I have been repeating this for three years, and at times people look surprised when I say this during press conferences.”

That’s quite an endorsement but there is merit to a resurgent Massa as his late 2012 form showed drastic improvement and most likely secured his Ferrari contract extension. The notion of Alonso supporting Massa for a world title is generous but I have a feeling that will not be needed as Massa may be one of the best drivers in the world but Alonso may be one of the best drivers in Formula One.

Do you think we’ll see an Alonso support program as a number 2 driver to Massa’s points lead? Or will we hear “Fernando is faster than you” on the radio?
