I read an article last week in The Wall Street journal about the A1GP series and the hedge fund RAB offer. Apparently, and this is no surprise to many, the series is not looking too healthy at the moment. Enter Mr. Ecclestone.
Grandprix.com and Pitpass (two very good F1 sites I might add) report that Mr. Bernie appeared at Brand Hatch over the weekend and the speculation is to possibly merge a GP2 winter series with the A1GP series as a feeder for Formula 1.
The A1GP series has not taken too well as the my-country-against-yours is not really as big a draw as some expected and the series is not pitting the best against the best but junior drivers in similar cars. Perhaps Mr. Ecclestone could change all of that. A feeder series for F1 Racing? You bet. New sponsor deals closely linked with Formula 1 teams? You bet. SLEC ownership? Hmmmm.
All new GP2 winter series sounds like a terrific time and I am all for it.
