I must admit that I will miss Kimi Raikkonen next year in F1 but i am happy he is going to do something he actually likes. According to the Beer Matt over at Autosport, Raikkonen has been signed by Citroen to join the WRC series next year.
Red Bull will be sponsoring Raikkonen in a Citroen Junior team car. Raikkonen will be joined by yet another Sebastien in the likes of Sebastien Ogier. The opportunity has been speculated for several days now with Autosport leading the prophecies quite accurately I might add and it is a good move for Raikkonen.
“I always wanted to compete in rally, especially in the World Rally Championship at some point in my career,” said Raikkonen.
“Thanks to Red Bull, I have the opportunity to drive the best car of the series with the Citroen C4. This is a new but very exciting challenge.”
Could the link with Red Bull turn into something at Red Bull Racing’s F1 team next year? Sebastian Vettel is set to drive for the squad until 2011; could Raikkonen be up for vettel or Mark Webber’s seat in 2011?
“For the moment we have a one-year contract and we will see how it goes for the future,” Raikkonen said. “I am really looking forward to testing the car and taking the start of the first rally.”
Good job to Autosport and Matt Beer for staying on top of the story and offering predictions and good for Kimi. I will miss him in F1 but it’s nice to know he’ll be racing.
