Conway to drive for Ed Carpenter Racing on road courses in 2014, Carpenter remains on ovals

Mike Conway has been hired by Ed Carpenter Racing to drive the #20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet powered car on the road and street circuits in the 2014 season. Team owner/driver Ed Carpenter will still drive the #20 car on the ovals.

“We couldn’t be happier to welcome Mike Conway to the Ed Carpenter Racing family,” said Carpenter, the only owner/driver in the IndyCar Series. “My partners, (team manager) Tim Broyles and I are committed to building an organization based on culture, sustainability, and performance.  We are very proud of the group of people we have assembled and bringing Mike into the fold creates an opportunity for us to show even more value to our partners and strengthen our team by competing for victories at every single event in the 2014 IndyCar Series.”

Conway has 60 career starts in IndyCar, but dropped off the full time schedule after testing at Auto Club Speedway in 2012 and deciding to not race on ovals any longer. Conway did the unthinkable last season when he won at Detroit Race 1driving for Dale Coyne Racing after just meeting the team on opening day of the weekend. He also competed in 6 additional races, 5 for Coyne where he scored a 3rd place at Detroit Race 2 and 3 top tens as well as 1 race for Rahal Letterman Lanigan racing at Long Beach where he started in 5th and ran inside the top 5 until a mechanical failure sidelined him.

This move gives Ed Carpenter Racing a rough balance of talent in the #20 car. Carpenter is one of the best drivers on ovals, but on the road courses, he has struggled tremendously. Conway on the other hand is one of the best road and street course drivers out there, his dominating performance at Detroit as well as his record on them proves it.
