Sebastian Vettel said he was in early talks with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko about the idea succeeding the 82-year-old Austrian when his contract with the team ends in 2026.
“We’re in contact about this, though maybe not so intensively or in-depth yet, but it’s possible,” Vettel told Austrian broadcaster ORF. “What form that might take will have to be seen. He’s already said a few times that he’d stop, but he’s still here, and I wish him all the best so that he stays around for a very long time.
“And I don’t think the goal is to have someone come in who simply replaces him. But maybe, whoever it is, it would be nice if the work he’s put in is carried on.”
Max Verstappen says he’d welcome Vettel back to Red Bull. It’s an interesting move and one that would make sense given Sebastian’s success with the team.
The rumors around Frederic Vasseur at Ferrari still percolate with the notion that Christian Horner could be a replacement for him should the team make more drastic changes. That seems like a bit of a wild pitch but at this point, you never know. If that were the case, Maybe Sebastian could find himself in Horner’s role. Hey, Christian was a former driver-turned-team boss back in the day so why not?
The reality is that both Horner and Marko’s roles are very challenging and they require a very deep understanding of the series, feeder series and much more. In Horner’s case, running a team like Red Bull is a role that is not easily replicated by just anyone and Helmut’s role has been instrumental in finding and developing some of the world’s most exciting champions.
Time will tell but it’s an interesting development for sure.
