Downshift: Exclusive interview with Shell’s Mike Evans

0

I had the opportunity to visit the Shell Eco-Marathons this weekend in Houston and as luck would have it, I bumped into the team leader of Shell’s Formula 1 fuel development program, Mike Evans. You’ve most likely heard our conversations with Guy Lovett and know how much we think of him but Mike is equally singular in his passion for motor sport and he, like Guy, is one of the nicest people you will meet in the paddock.

Mike is the proverbial Charlie Whiting of the Shell Eco-Marathon event and he’s also a keen driver having won some club championships in the 90’s in the UK. I took the opportunity to ask Mike not only about the Eco-Marathon but about F1 in general. Here is what you’ll learn:

  • Mercedes AMG Petronas’s spilt turbo and Ferrari’s similar system
  • What Ferrari are currently struggling with
  • The departure of Stefano Domenicali
  • The fuel and lubricant performance so far
  • Which fuel iteration the team are currently on
  • The opportunity of engine performance upgrades and how that is handled
  • Much, much more.

Don’t miss this rare behind-the-scenes look into the world of Formula 1 from the eyes of a superlative mind in the technology side of the business. Apologies for the wind noise, I can’t control the wind but I tried.
