As discussed on Podcast #31, here is the article from Autosport in which Tony Purnell shares his thoughts on why the engine freeze is good for F1. Any thoughts?

My lengthy missive on KERS….. interspersed in the Autosport article…. Autosport :”FIA technical consultant Tony Purnell is adamant that Formula One’s manufacturers will be better off thanks to the introduction of a 10-year engine freeze in the sport.” I guess they’ll be better off, but they’ll funnel the money that went to engine development into bigger motorhomes, or some other vastly important thing to racing….. Autosport :”Although the sport’s car makers are still pushing for their own ‘Fuji-proposal’ to freeze engines from 2010 to 2013, Purnell believes that the 10-year freeze regulations recently rubber-stamped by the FIA will actually be… Read more »

GOOD JOB JOHN! John just said a big ol fancy version of what I might twad on if I was having pms! And mind you, you don’t wanna be in the same room with me when I have a mood swing! Back to business, is Tony Purnell a nut or what? He’s contradicting himself like a bloody idiot! First he says ohh save up on engine development then he says to build their own damn KERS? Now wouldn’t that cost money?! And secondly WTF are they trying to do to the sport I love? YOu can’t bloody call it F1… Read more »

In the end game, I still think the biggest gains to be had in any motorsport is the lump and battery technology. My feeling is they should offer incentives for alternative fuel engine development instead of freezing engine R&D. Why not have hybrid systems of hydrogen and fossil fuel? Why not let the teams seek to work with a new materials and improve. how can F1 contribute to the automobile world other than capturing spent energy and returning it to a storage device for future use. It will be interesting to see how many tenths a KERS system will give… Read more »
