Guess what? Bottas is a rookie… full stop

I appreciate that Williams F1 have been working with Valtteri Bottas for a while now and he’s ran in a few Friday practice sessions and he’s helped the team with other aspects of their racing program. In fact, I understand why Xevi Pujolar would tell AUTOSPORT:

“Because he has been with us for a long time and because he has done a few Friday sessions, we know him well,” Pujolar said.

“We don’t feel like he is a rookie.

“His feedback is good as well.”

That makes sense if you’re into semantics and syntax and you’d like to distance your new rookie driver from the rest of the herd but I’ve one big caveat for the term “rookie” in Formula One…he’s never been officially listed as a driver on the grid of an actual Formula 1 grand prix on a Sunday. Yes, that makes him a rookie.

He may very well be a rookie who could re-ignite Williams F1’s march toward the front and I’m very excited that a rookie of his caliber could be the one to do it. Here’s to Williams F1 and their newest rookie, Valtteri Bottas.
