Red Bull’s Helmut Marko is set to retire at the end of 2025 ending a 21-year career leading their junior program. Marko delivered two champions, Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, while occasionally stirring controversy in the process.
Time moves on and Red Bull is shedding it’s legacy structure in favor of a new crew at the helm of the operation. After losing key personnel such as Adrian Newey and Christian Horner, the team now look set to part ways with Marko. Team boss Laurent Mikes said:
“It’s completely normal that we review how we can improve the way we operate all the time. So I’m not saying that specifically for Helmut, but I’m saying that in general we are in an environment where we always challenge each other and look for the next steps, no matter how small it is in trying to work together. But I can only thank Helmut for the role he has played in making what looked like a difficult situation at the mid-season making work with the support,”
He isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and often times said the inside thing out loud but he did deliver Red Bull some serious champions combining for eight world titles. HE was also an integral part of former owner Dietrich Mateschitz’s program.
Often considered to be draconian in his treatment of young drivers, he had deference for some and not others. He’s an interesting character and you can hear more about him and his racing history on this episode of TPF Stories.
