Is Hamilton PR machine helping or hurting

6

The Telegraph’s Kevin Garside has written an interesting article dissecting Lewis’s PR appearances and the reaction to it.Is Lewis doing more damage by being over promoted or is he improving his career?  Is his appearance at everything, endorsements for all things and comments just opportunistic or is he really helping his cause.  Read the story here and let us know your thoughts on the issue.

If you are a fan of Lewis’s or not, this topic should be an interesting one to unpack.

“You’ve just done an hour and a half race and worked your backside off, and then they expect you to sit down and straightaway get out of the car and talk to people,” Hamilton told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Are you crazy? Damn man, I’m knackered! I need a drink! Sometimes I like to do that. “But I feel that I’ve had so much support from the media, especially last year and in the build-up to this year, and I know that with the performance that I’ll have coming up, I feel that they’ll be back on my side and… Read more »

Media is positive/negative thing for these guys. It gets them positive attention when they don’t always deserve it about what they do on the track; and at the same time it can really beat them up for every little thing that happens. I agree he opens himself up for it with some of things he does and says but it is unfair to link everything they do off track to performance on the track.

In some way, I think Lewis enjoyed and deserved a lot of the praise he got last year but with high hopes and lots of adulation comes responsibility…if they want it or not. We’ve all seen episodes where the media can make and break a person. for me, this is another case where Anthony, as his manager, should be protecting him. Not just hooking up the coin in endorsements and being opportunistic but developing a full media strategy. I don’t think Anthony knows enough about sports management to get this done and if he were really on top of things;… Read more »

I agree with you about Anthony. Anthony is not familliar enough withthe enviroment to properly control Lewis’s career and handle the PR. If Junior Jr. was in this sitation I think Nelson would have insisted on outside managment, and been there more to guide his driving career just because he understands the pressure, and peoples perceptions. Not that Nelson may ever have to worry about it since Piquet jr. will be in the IRL next year the way everyone is talking.

“You’ve just done an hour and a half race and worked your backside off, and then they expect you to sit down and straightaway get out of the car and talk to people.” Does he not realize that the career he has chosen requires him to do such trivial things? And for the money he makes, sitting down and talking to Peter Windsor for five minutes should be easy, if not an honor. I understand he may be “knackered”, but he has to learn how to live up to his own hype. To paraphrase Frank Zappa, “Shut up and drive… Read more »
