Is it the right choice? Will Kimi, Fernando equal fireworks?

While the press ponders the 2014 lineup at Ferrari, we thought we’d ask you about the duo of Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen. Gazzetta dello Sport has Sir Jackie Stewart suggesting that the pairing of Kim and Fernando could unsettle Alonso.

AUTOSPORT has quoted former Ferrari sporting director, Cesare Fiorio, as saying he thinks the move is conservative and that he would have recommended a younger driver.

“In my opinion it’s a conservative choice. I would have gone for an emerging driver rather than one at the tail end of his career.

“He doesn’t live like an athlete and to be champion in F1 talent is not enough.

“You need physical, technical and psychological effort and, from what I know and have seen, he’s the type of guy who takes his bag and leaves shortly after the sessions.

“I don’t know how much technical contribution he can bring.”

Other Formula 1 journalists feel that there could be fireworks should Raikkonen prevail over Alonso while others feel the Fin will not take kindly to being the #2 at the team. No worries there as Ferrari say there won’t be #2 and that the drivers will have equal status.

“It brings to mind football fans who are scared of rival teams because they have so many strong forwards and so they hope they will fight each other for the ball,” said Domenicali.

“For anyone thinking that the choice of Kimi is somehow an anti-Alonso choice, I can put their minds at rest: at Ferrari, everyone knows the interests of the team come first and only then those of the individual.

“Fernando is a key asset for this team and he will be for a long time. I’m sure he is the first to be happy with a choice made to strengthen the group, because he is too intelligent not to realise that a stronger team can only be an advantage.”

All I know is that Kimi is lethal during the race and Fernando is too but the Spaniard is even better in qualifying and I suspect he fare well against the Fin. Anything could happen but if you were looking for the most impressive driver lineup in 2014, Ferrari found it.

Can Mercedes beat them with the Hamilton / Rosberg duo? Can Vettel beat both of them on his own? It’s going to be an interesting year and that’s if all the 2014 regulation junk doesn’t neuter the racing…which it probably will.
