Pastor Maldonado was home in Venezuela this weekend, and a big “hero’s welcome” was on the agenda for the country’s first Formula 1 race winner.
You know the type of thing. They usually involve F1 cars. As did this: a planned 12-lapper on a street course before 20,000 fans and VIPs, including Sir Frank Williams and big-time owner Toto Wolff.
Sound good?
Well, according to this Autosport report, things didn’t go as planned. Maldonado hit some bumpy ground and then a curb, damaging the suspension on the FW33 he was driving. Apparently “saving the day” was another PDVSA-backed driver, Rodolfo Gonzalez. He pulled off an eight-lap run in his GP2 car.
A storm passing through then put an end to any thought of repairing Maldonado’s car and getting him back out.
I would just love to have heard Sir Frank’s response.
