It’s been a long time since Robert Kubica sat in a Formula 1 car but after 115 laps in a private test for Renault, the Polish driver seemed right at home. Kubica used the 2012 Lotus car painted in Renault colors and it was the same Chassis that Kimi Raikkonen used in the 2012 season. Renault Sport F1 said:
“So why did we keep it quiet? It was a private test, for Robert.
“But we can tell you this – Robert complained about grip, understeer, downforce and had the biggest smile on after his 115 laps.”
Kubica’s F1 career looked incredibly promising and his talent was certainly being talked about in the paddock but an off-season Rally accident ended his career with severe damage to his hand and arm.
After making a return to racing in the WRC2 category and nearly contesting the WEC LMP1 category, Kubica ran the F1 test and it is said, according to Autosport, that more tests could be in the offing.
Could Renault be looking at Kubica for 2018 alongside Nico Hulkenberg? It’s possible but they’ll have many to choose from so Robert will need to be on pace in order to compete for the seat currently held by Jolyon Palmer.
Regardless, it is great to see Robert back in an F1 car and I am incredibly happy for him. I feel like the sport was robbed of a truly unique talent in Robert when he had his accident in Rallying.
