Kubica secures Rally title in Spain..with eye on F1

Former Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica has secured the World Rally division 2 (WRC2) series title with his win in Spain this weekend. The polish driver has won five of seven events to seal his bid for the title but says that while winning is great, his focus is elsewhere:

“I’m happy but there is a long way for me to go in my recovery,” Kubica said.

“I’ve used this year as a recovery year and to gain experience.

“It’s no secret that one day I would like to come back to single-seaters, but I think rallying has helped me a lot this year – not only for my recovery, but to keep my mind busy.”

It’s an interesting statement as last week Ferrari’s Stefano Domenicali said the team looked at a potential option for Kubica but the extent of his life-threatening injuries hadn’t healed to the point needed to compete in F1. Domenicali said he doesn’t believe Kubica will make it back to F1.

Kubica is winning and driving well regardless and I hope he realizes that there is life beyond F1 and the wins he is securing are tangible examples to this remarkable mans spirit and stamina. To survive, thrive and win rally races is no small task but I also understand that he doesn’t want his life to be defined by the rally crash and would like a shot at full redemption in F1.
