Lewis Hamilton Faces Racial Slurs In Spain!

Spanish fans, feeling loyal to Fernando Alonso and his arguable mistreatment at McLaren last year, hurled racial slurs and derision toward McLaren and specifically Lewis Hamilton this weekend.

In what could only be called sad and pathetic behavior, the FIA has stepped in to threaten sanctions against Spain’s sporting authorities if the issue is not sorted out immediately. See story here at Autosport.com.

I’m not pleased with what happened in circuit, more to say, I feel ashamed. But I also think that the guy has a too thin skin…. his reaction calling daddy Ron to protect his charm against the fury of spaniards is something I’ve never seen before. Schu was one of the most hated racers in F1 and I’ve never heard a word about it. And what to say of Senna…. you loved him or hated him… Millions of fans throw him a lot of hate after his collisions with Prost. Ooops, excuse me, I was talking about MEN and RACERS….… Read more »

I mentioned in the forum that I can recall Schumacher being called a Nazi and fascist after some fans got upset at his on-track actions. Michael never addressed it and went on with business. There is no room for racial attacks in F1 and I think the Spanish Sporting Authorities should be responsible for controlling this issue with possible sanctions levied by the FIA if they don’t. Beyond that, Lewis and McLaren can expect heat from their actions last year. Whether regarding Alonso or with their lies and cheating.

How these fans got in and then were allowed to vent their anger really says something about Spain. F1 has always been political and has split nations through events on the track. Yet its become very nasty and personal, the FIA has given the Spanish authorities the opportunity to put this right. If it is not stamped out then strict action should be taken. I do recall the F1 Magazine sending an English fan, complete with Hamilton wares to Spain, to watch the final GP of the season. While it created alot of interest from local fans and media, the… Read more »

uuuuuhhhh… come one…. I can see whole brit media and some behaved fans throwing the first stone against spanish f1 fans…. look at yourself before your words may come against you.

Sounds like a badly worded threat? Make no mistake, I’m not a Hamilton fan but I haven’t seen any British fans at any grand prix with tanned face paint and making racist remarks against Alonso. It’s all so easy to blame someone else when really you should be looking within your own ranks.

How can you defend these so called spanish fans? Surely they are exactly the sort you don’t want attending an F1 event?

I doubt anyone defends them for their actions but I do recall some American and British fans, don’t forget Britain’s disdain for Brothers Schumacher, calling them all kinds of vile things. Just the same, Tiger Woods faced a lot of this bunk here in the states so we are far from innocent. It is not a “Black” thing either. It can be sexist, nationalistic or racial. Danica has faced her adversaries and harsh female criticism that I am sure has hurt. It really comes down to having some decorum and scruples. Let’s face it; some people, regardless of nationality, have… Read more »

It’s not in my mind to threat anybody here, dear raithrover. But it can be that in short time some fellow countrymen make something that could embarrass you. Let me tell you that I will keep myself from saying something like UK has a racism problem here…. just some crazy man that has loosen his minds….

I know what my countrymen (especially south of the border) are capable of, but in the past two decades I’ve seen a remarkable improvement generally, and not just at sporting events. If such a thing (like the events in Spain) happened in the UK today, then those responsible would have been charged by the police and would be in trouble. There will always be a minority, in the case of the English the lager drinking louts who think The Sun is a decent read. However things here have improved greatly, and I cannot say the same of some areas of… Read more »

I can’t see racism as a social problem here in Spain. I really think that to call a man “black” isn’t the same here and in UK or USA. There is a common history between Spain and America that have used our societies to live together with no harm or hate. There was no apartheid here, no anti-black laws. In fact, we’ve been accused by government bodies of the whole UE that we’ve been very easy and protective with immigration. Another question is that a couple of silly sick fans of FA, people who just have arrived to that ¿sport?… Read more »

More to say, I can’t believe it. Ed Gorman is making a poll, asking if Spain grands prix should be cancelled….. he thinks that it could be a fair punishment….. It’s fine to see that Ed, who’s blog has been closed since last season was finished, has decided to open his mouth to comment this big big issue…. Maybe it would be a good thing after all…. Finally I would feel so tired about this ¿sport? that I could move on to more productive activities and forget all this sickness (FIA, Dennis, Ferrari, Senna, Schus, Hills, Fangios,) once and forever.… Read more »

I wouldn’t worry too much about polls Arch, the results so far are overwhelmingly “no” and that’s from a mostly British readership so I don’t think it is quite as damning as it seems. Racial issues are always emotionally charged and suffice to say that most countries have racists elements in them. As an American reading this story, I really didn’t see this as a indictment of any Nation be it Britain or Spain. I saw it as some fans that have issues and a lack of decency toward their common man. That does not imply Spain has that issue… Read more »

As for F1 being British, Grace and I just talked about that in Podcast #39. It is an international sport and should be relevant to each market and governed, in conjunction with local authorities, to ensure the safe, successful execution of the race in an attendee-friendly environment. Be them drivers, team personnel, sponsors, fans or media. I think F1 in general is excited to be holding two races in Spain and it is a growing market. As you say, these could be Spanish football fans just warming up to F1’s new presence in Spain and they are bereft of the… Read more »

It’s funny to me how a country that is built on the traditions and culture of the Moores and most of Spanish people have a drop of African blood in them can be so ignorant. Not only to black people in general but to them self. Read you history and be proud of your beautiful country and think before you speak..

I don’t know who Ed Gorman is should I be embarrassed or grateful? Going by the poll that Arch mentioned the latter. Sounds like pot stirring sensationalism cashing in on the topic. Not journalism. Is he just a blogger or supposed to be a professional jurno? Despite the comments I made in other related topics here. Which I hope weren’t taken too badly. Talk of cancelling races is way overboard. Why? Because the problem wasn’t a whole crowd or physically violent. Also importantly all the authorities have sent out the correct message regarding it. Therefore it is being seen to… Read more »

Paul:

quoted from his blog:
http://timesonline.typepad.com/formula_one/

“Ed Gorman has worked for The Times for nearly 20 years as a news and foreign correspondent and for the past ten years as the newspaper’s sailing correspondent. Last year, however, he gave up the second best job in sports journalism for the best one and swapped his sea boots for a pair of ear plugs when he became Formula One correspondent. He’s been busy since with Jenson Button’s first win, Michael Schumacher’s retirement and now the emergence of Lewis Hamilton.”

If Spaniards are “racist”, then they’ve more than earned the right to be – and be respected for it. If your country was invaded by Arabs/African Muslims, then ruled by them for over 700 years – during which time hundreds of thousands, if not over a million, of your countrymen and especially women, were dragged back to North Africa to be slaves for sultans, sheiks, pashas, and of course, labour for who knows what – then by god you have totally earned your right to be racist against blacks!!!!

I doubt any nation has a clean record of having never imposed atrocities on another race. Spanish Conquistadors were not the nicest folks with to the Native South Americans when conquering them or others during her magnificent maritime domination of the world. So to America has little room for its oppression of Blacks through slavery or the British Empire and their oppression of the Asians/India/China or Scotland and Ireland or Russia’s communists who killed millions or N. korea’s genocide etc. etc. The finger of blame usually turns upon itself and while this site is about opinion, fanning the flames of… Read more »

Live from USA

Give us our Formula One back. Right now. I mean it. Right now.

To think I was upset about not making it to Brazil. I’m glad their Riot Police made it though. I hope there’s enough wood shampoos and mace for everyone.

Thanks for blocking out my previous comment. please block my other one you posted. Just click on darren’s name & see what racist site you and your readers end up on. This is what blacks in america go through.

Jarno’s Dad: This may be de riguer for sites you visit and you may be full of vim and vigor on these topics but you can post them elsewhere my friend. We have a higher standard at F1B. You can say much of the same things without the flaming or terse nature and intended ire-rising words you have chosen. There is no political agenda on this site as it has nothing to do with American or other nations politics. Those comments can be saved for other political sites as well. This is a site to share opinions on F1. Period.… Read more »

your comment:
This is a site to share opinions on F1. Period. Racism in F1 is not condoned and I very much appreciate your opinion on that. What I will not appreciate is the high-handed nature of the posts, terse, abrasive words or political agendas.

darren’s comment:
then by god you have totally earned your right to be racist against blacks!!!!

I have to say that Darren is entitled to his beliefs. His arguments have a point. Whether I adhere to these points… especially since my racial view leans towards the diaspora… are questionable. the point here is… F1Blog is a private site of Opinion under the control of Todd. If HE deems such opinions to be OTT is up to him. I would hope that he would allow any and all opinions to be posted and then debated… as long as the said opinions were given with some semblance of reasonable intelligence. I’ve not seen that Todd would censor unreasonably….… Read more »

quick retort to my own reply…. I’m not saying that I’d exit this site for censorship of Darren’s statements. I would have to look at all angles after my current drunk has worn off.

after all, I have, this evening, adopted a friends neurotic dog from california because they are having problems shipping him to switzerland… I told them to move to Bern.

jinkees… seemes I’ve missed out on some controversy.
although the libertarian in me wishes to be privy to all statements I’ve got to support Todd in his governance of F1B.

This is a PRIVATE F1 Opinion site.

His ideals, however flawed, reign supreme.

No matter how wrong he may be.

JD: I understand your point very clear. I did remove the link because quite frankly this site isn’t here to promote political agendas regarding race etc. To be honest, I have little time to check links of names and that’s caught me out several times with Google as they have had linkbacks that attempt to cheat SEO and Google page rank etc. That just does damage to F1B. We went from page rank 5 to 4 because of it when our traffic is clearly higher than a 4 in my opinion. I try to delete many of the name links… Read more »
