A week ago I asked if anyone had anything for Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez…it seems that someone does. If very well could be Jorge Lorenzo who held off Marquez for a win in the British Grand Prix or the collar bone of Marquez himself that bested the 20-year-old Spaniard at Silverstone.
Marquez suffered a dislocated collar bone during practice for Sunday’s race and was clearly struggling with the injury but not enough to see him miss the podium. The most dynamic rookie in MotoGP history finished second to Lorenzo but only after taking the lead briefly in the waning laps of the race. Lorenzo and fellow Spanish rider and Marquez teammate, Dani Pedrosa both smelled blood in the water and charged hard to take advantage of the youngster’s sore shoulder. For Pedrosa, that injury didn’t prove serious enough as he slotted in third behind Marquez. Pedrosa said:
“I’m disappointed with the result today,” stated Pedrosa as he reviewed the race. “I rode well but got a bad start and conceded a lot of seconds on the opening two laps, so I had to really push in order to recover ground. I gradually caught up with Marc and Jorge, but I wore my tyres out in the process and at the end of the race I lacked grip on the right-hand corners.”
For Lorenzo, the win clawed back much-needed points to keep the defending champion in the hunt. Having suffered a broken collar bone himself, the Spanish rider was elated with the win and the chance to keep his title hopes alive.
for Marquez, he reckons the 2nd place at Silverstone is as good as a victory:
“I’m very happy with how things went today,” said Marquez after the race. “This morning when my shoulder popped out I thought that my weekend was over, but the doctors were able to put it back in place quickly and that allowed me to be up there at the front, fighting with Jorge.”
The question remains, had Marquez been injury-free, would Lorenzo have been able to get back by the young phenom at Silverstone. While Marquez’s run of successive wins has stalled at 4, thanks to a motivated Lorenzo, the series heads to San Marino in two weeks time and a healthy Marquez could pick up where he left off…winning.
