Malaysia to host ‘twilight’ race

Apparently Bernie Ecclestone was pressing the Malaysian GP organizers to make investment in their track to convert the race to a night race. I am sure this was before the current economic slow-down but the organizers have met him half way with a ‘twilight’ race. What is a twilight race you ask?

Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chairman Mokhzani Mahathir said that Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone had agreed to a start time of 5:00 pm, two hours later than previously. “We have amended the contract. The race will start at 5:00 pm. It is another way of saying that there will be no night race until 2015,” he told reporters.

He also added that he explained this to Bernie and that Bernie said he would back off on the night race idea. I would hope so. spending money they don’t have on lights for a night race would be a daunting task for any circuit at this point as most circuits in the F1 contractual world are close run things with little capital to invest in a sluggish economy.
