Manor hires Ryan as Racing Director

Manor Marussia F1 has hired former McLaren sporting director, Dave Ryan, as the new racing director as John Booth and Graeme Lowdon are exiting the team at the end of the season.

Ryan parted ways with McLaren back in 2009 over the Lewis Hamilton lying incident at the Australian Grand Prix.

Here is the full press release from Manor about the appointment of Ryan:

The Manor Marussia F1 Team is pleased to announce the appointment of Dave Ryan to the role of Racing Director.

Dave, who joins the team with immediate effect, brings 34 years of Formula 1 experience to this newly created position. As a highly respected member of McLaren Racing and the F1 Paddock, he contributed to an impressive record of race wins and constructors’ and drivers’ world championships, latterly in the role of Sporting Director. Over the past six years he established the Von Ryan Racing sports car team and developed it into the competitive force it is today in the Blancpain Endurance Series.

As Racing Director, Dave will oversee race team operations during an exciting period of development for the Manor Marussia F1 Team. 2015 has largely been a rebuilding year, but looking ahead to 2016, equipped with class-leading Mercedes-Benz Hybrid power, the team expects to be competing for championship points and position.

Stephen Fitzpatrick, Owner/Investor, Manor Marussia F1 Team:

“I’m delighted to announce Dave’s appointment in the newly created position of Racing Director. He needs no introduction, of course, having spent 34 years within the sport contributing to an incredible tally of race and championship wins.

“Along with our new Mercedes Benz power unit, technical partnership with Williams and recent additions to the design and technical team, Dave’s arrival is another important step towards our goal of creating a truly competitive racing team.

“I am also able to confirm that John Booth and Graeme Lowdon will be leaving the team at the end of the current season. I have the utmost respect for them as individuals and for all they have achieved, both with this team and in their long careers in Motorsport, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their hard work and dedication during this season in particular. Like every great story, there comes a time to start a new chapter.”

Dave Ryan

“I’m very excited to be joining the Manor Marussia F1 Team at a pivotal time in their development. Having spent time with Stephen, and understood his vision for the future, it is clear he has ensured there is a strong platform from which the team can make big steps forward in the seasons ahead. Manor has all the hallmarks of a fiercely competitive racing team, but having grown up in a much more contemporary Formula 1 era, it is a very lean operation with a collaborative culture, which leaves it well placed to contend with the sport’s future direction. There is clearly a big challenge ahead and a lot of work to do, but I can’t wait to meet the wider team and get down to business.”

So, I’m guessing that the new owner of Manor wanted to clean house and put in people he trusts to fufill his overall strategic philosophy.

Patrick Chapman

I wish he would share that philosophy with us so we could all understand what the heck is going on there and maybe get some sort of understanding of what the immediate future holds for the team, He’s managed to lose the top three people in the team and I guess it’s not going to be easy to fill that void in the short term.

Maybe this is a good time for McLaren to bring in some new people and reinvigorate their team.

Isn’t Booth rumored to be returning to his old Renault team when (if?) they resume control of the current Lotus team? Lowdon seemed to be talking around going where ever Booth was going during a BBC interview this weekend.
