In a nail-biter of a shoot out with Takuma Sato for the last remaining seat at Scuderia Toro Rosso, Sebastien Bourdais was given the ride for 2009. Many at F1B felt this was the correct decision and much rejoicing was had. His boss, Red Bull CEO Dietrich Mateschitz, has spoken of his choice and to be honest, it is sort of the “stick with the evil you know” statement that is sure to really fire up Le Seb for 2009.
“There were no significant alternatives to Bourdais,” he said. “Sato was doing well in testing, but he would have started where Bourdais started a year ago.
“Bourdais had some good races and very competitive qualifyings last season, but also some bad luck. When you invest in a driver for one year and he is doing reasonably well, it makes sense to work with him for another year. He has the potential to make the best of his second year.”
I haven’t seen this kind of enthusiasm about signing a driver since…well, maybe a Ralf Schumacher or Tarso Marques signing. Sheesh. Didi, have a Red Bull dude, you need some wings on this.
