Merc poaches Red Bull boffins Ellis and Wood

After parting ways with team boss Ross Brawn, the management-heavy Mercedes AMG Petronas team have announced the signing of more brains in the back room by securing the services of Red Bull’s Mark Ellis and Giles Wood. These boys from Brackley are serious about winning!

“The Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team is pleased to announce two key engineering appointments for the 2014 season.

“These two newly-created roles will further strengthen the team’s technical organisation, particularly in the fields of simulation and vehicle dynamics.

“Mark Ellis will join the team as performance director in June 2014. Giles Wood will take up the position of chief engineer, simulation and development at the same time.

“Both new recruits will join Mercedes AMG Petronas from Red Bull Technology.”

Red Bull have taken a bit of a hit from would-be poachers after McLaren announced they have lured aerodynamics man and Adrian Newey disciplePeter Prodromou to bolster the Woking-based team’s design efforts. Red Bull seems to be paying the typical price of success…poaching the top brains is a way of life in Formula 1 and a sure way to get innovation and engineering expertise without stealing a Ferrari technical manual and having it copied at your local Kinko’s prompting a $100 million fine.

With the Merc poaching, one wonders just how many brains that team needs with Geoff Willis, Aldo Costa, Paddy Lowe and Messrs. Ellis and Wood. I would imagine the talk around the office requires a protractor and abacus just to keep up with idle chat.
