Mick Schumacher to join Ferrari young driver program

According to a report in Autosport, 2018 European Formula 3 champ, Mick Schumacher, is close to inking a Ferrari young driver program deal. This would be the first step in affiliating Schumacher with a Formula 1 team and what a team to be associated with.

Mick’s father, Michael, was a five-time champion with Ferrari and his name is synonymous with the Italian Marque. A Schumacher at Ferrari is a big move for both parties. Schumacher hasn’t commented on the deal but Autosport says it is close to being made official.

Schumacher is getting prepared to race in Formula 2 this season but the move would most likely see him participate in the in-season testing in 2019 for Ferrari. The move makes sense since Antonio Giovinazzi has now taken a full ride at Sauber and Ferrari need a new young driver in their stable. What better driver than a Schumacher?

This is an interesting pick-up. I did a Wiki search and found a record of his career. Not exactly spotless, but the potential is there. Ferrari’s kept an eye on him through a link with a team called “Prenna”. They obviously see a possibility that he just might make Formula 1. We’ll have to see how well he does in Formula 2 before we make any solid pronouncements, but this is definitely someone to watch.

Prema.

Duly noted.

About time Ferrari formalised the link with Mick, he’s had an informal relationship/invite since really 2016. I understand part of it was that he and the family wanted to keep a less formal link for a while.
