NASCAR Vs. F1: Points Is Points!

6

My jury is still out on the newer F1 points system. Yes it makes for exciting title races but the two point spread is sticking in my throat like just-chewed antacid. I am learning to deal with it but after hearing about NASCAR’s Race to the Cup points deal, I am thankful for Bernie, Max and the new system we have.

After being the most consistent racer all season, which is what NASCAR is all about, Jeff Gordon lead the points nearly the whole season. Now that the chase to the race is over, he goes into the final races in second place. NASCAR gives the top drivers 5000 points and a 0 point bonus for each win. That puts Jeff in second. Now color me reactionary but shouldn’t they just give those 10 point bonuses out when they actually win the races and at the end of the chase, what points you have is what points you have? It’s a good thing I don’t watch NASCAR because I would be miffed to watch an entire season, have my favorite driver on his way to a championship only to have all his points, effort and consistency taken away and placed behind the eight ball going into the cup races. Why even watch the season? The season really starts now and if they chuck all the other drivers out after the chase for the race; why even give points for 20th or 28th during the season. Just award points for the top ten and call it a day.

I would be insulted if I were a fan. Heck, I’m not even a fan and I am insulted for them fans.

Now you understand why folks who use to watch NASCAR in the 80’s and 90’s like myself, despise the modern era of NASCAR and refuse to watch it. First, you made the rookie mistake of believing that NASCAR is about the fans. It is not. What NASCAR has done however is created the illusion that it is about the fans when it doesn’t even figure them into the equation. This buys them some time before the fans figure out that they’re being dupped because the fans believe that NASCAR is acting in their best interest and it takes them a… Read more »

Yeah, I stopped watching in the late 90’s when the series became the WWA of motorsport.

I think Darrell Waltrip says it best here guys in an article a few months back. http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/story/7138354 Let me ‘splain a few things for you We’re closing in on the Chase for the Nextel Cup, and I understand why NASCAR created it. When football starts in the fall, racing wants to create some excitement. But something is wrong when points leader loses a 300-point advantage when the Chase begins. Gordon has done an incredible job so far this season, and now he’s going to have all of it taken away from him while somebody that squeaks into the Chase could… Read more »

Grace, I do believe Todd struck a nerve with this post for you!! Don’t hold back! I am still a fan of Nap-Car and have watched it from back in the 80’s to the present. Never could watch a race all the way through and probably never will. But it is Racing and I am a Racing Fan through and through so i watch all racing! I do have my preferences if I have to watch one live and TIVO another. No discrimination here! F1, Nap-Car, Champ Car, Indy, MotoGP, Rally, Snowmobile, drag racing, sprint cars, modifieds, WoO at my… Read more »

My disdain for NASCAR is not an elitist F1 snob thing; it is because of the downward spiral I think it took. The points deal is among them. Racing is racing and I used to watch it but I only have so much time and F1 fills that time nicely. Grace has foisted MotoGP on me and I am making time for that but she hasn’t begun to warm up to Le Mans or ALMS. Hmmmm.

BHY – Thanks for posting the DW article, though you should mark you calendars because I actually agreed with DW. I don’t think that’s ever happened. Although I love that fans accused DW of being a NASCAR yes man. Are you new to old DW?

And Todd, I don’t know about ALMS.. maybe if Liz gets back into it, I’ll consider it.
