It depends on who you listen to but overall, the London Olympics have been a good event so far. The Olympic stadium is quite a piece of engineering achievement and there has been talk of a possible Formula One race that would utilize the stadium as the main venue.
Those talks continue but F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone is still keen for a Central London race telling Associated Press:
“I’d rather (have a race) where we originally planned in central London,”
The idea of a race in Central London started as a promotional concept and has taken flight with resources being utilized to prove the concept. Ecclestone has long wanted a race in London and intimated the concept on the eve of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this year.
As for a circuit using the Olympic Stadium? Ecclestone told Reuters:
“It depends on the circuit, at the moment we are just looking at that. Somebody is looking about going into the centre of the arena and out again, so whether that is going happen or not, we’ll have a look and see.”
time will tell if this is a viable option but there are four proposals on the table for a post-Olympics use of the stadium and the F1 race is just one of those options. Odds are, Ecclestone’s heart as been on a Central London race and that’s where the good money will be bet.
