Op-Ed: Are Senna & Chandhok getting along too well?

Now, I know some of you are going to accuse me of continuing my Karun Chandhok fan boy crusade here, but that isn’t what this is about.

Because I’m not sure this is a good thing I’m about to discuss.

Here is Chandhok’s latest Tweet:

And here’s the link to the picture.

If there’s anyone unwilling to trust Karun’s photo link, it’s a picture of a smiling Bruno Senna in front of a display of laptops. By all estimations, Bruno and Karun are out just doing some stuff together. (Other photos have them squeezed on a train, playing tennis — including one of Jaime Alguersari in “short short” — and in Chinatown.)

The boys seem to be getting on terrifically. Maybe Karun in some seems a bit pained (certainly on the train), but Senna either is a happy guy or has perfected the art of smiling on cue.

I can’t for the life of me decide if this is a good thing or not. Is this the development of a great team spirit, needed when they are part of a back-marker team — albeit one that has finished a race — or is this a sign that a killer instinct is missing?

Can you imagine Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher doing any of these things?

Do Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel’s trainers even talk?

Is there any way that Lewis Hamilton, after being beaten by his teammate Jenson Button, would be out checking laptops with him?

For all the talk of “Ferrari first,” do you think Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa are breaking bread together?

And, heck, further back in the field, we’ve all but been told that Williams wants its two drivers, Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg, to be fighting tooth and nail. Rubens isn’t the “teacher,” remember?

(Dare I mention two other names… Senna/Prost? Does that hit too close to home?)

Now, perhaps somewhere lurking off the side of these photos are the sponsors, which is the reason Senna and Chandhok are together. But I doubt that’s the case in all these shots. Certainly not the tennis ones or the one on the train.

Maybe for this team, this is necessary. With so far to come, both drivers need to be sharing all the information possible. If one gets ahead for a race, it really just means that driver might finish and might finish 15th or so.

They aren’t about to be battling for wins, or even points. So maybe this show of camaraderie is perfect for HRT Racing.

But that doesn’t mean I’m any less shocked to see it.
