Owner/Driver

Which manager-turned-team-owner attempted, but failed, to qualify his own car and returned to concentrate on management?  He is still involved in management in Formula 1today.

Doh! I knew this one.

Hey, NC I hope you don’t mind if I drag this one out a little if anyone is interested in playing along.

Does anyone know

What Team?
What Race?
or What Year?

Bernie was the 6th Beatle. I thought everyone knew that?

I’ve always referred to him as such.

Now, what year, what team did he own/drive for and which race was it? As a bonus; what driver did he manage and then later bought the team his driver drove for?

I know he bought the Brabham team. As for the rest, I’d just be guessing.

He drove for Connaught, in 1958. However, it was a long time ago that i read the biop.

still can’t find the article, as I’m trying to cheat and post simultaneously. Wrist slapping should follow…
But what I did find it through – eventually – was Wikipedia, I think…

Was that the race in question? It would make sense as Bernie’s local track was Brands Hatch.
Which would mean Jack Fairman – who I don’t know from Adam – raced there on his behalf, after qualifying a stunning 40 seconds slower than the rest.
How does that work??? I have my doubts about this.

Bernie qualifying, i mean! not jack.

1958 is correct. Connaught-Alta is the team. Race?

Got it! Monaco. He was registered at Brands Hatch as only an alternative driver, but ironically put in better times than he did at Monaco.
Info I found says his lap time was six minutes, but you could get a bicycle round in that time. So I’m still confused. The Bern works in mysterious ways though!

That’s it Mark. Monaco. Any idea what driver he managed prior to buying a team?

Jochen Rindt?

That’s a good guess Legend but not the guy. The give away hint is that this driver drove for the team Bernie bought. That should give it away. :)

Tim Schenken?

It can’t be the man himself? He was still racing then… I was tempted to type Jack B. but it seemed too crazy to be true.

All good guesses. But not the guy. The driver participated in the 1957 championship. That should narrow things down. Bernie managed him and later bought the team he raced for. Then Bernie attempted to qualify.

Think I can close the book on this one.
Stuart Lewis-Evans?

You got it!! Nice.
