Sergio Perez had a great race in Baku with a podium finish and he had to wrest that away from Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen who was facing a 5-second penalty but just to be safe, the Force India driver passed the Finn on the final lap.
The fans voted Perez driver of the day and that’s his second win of that fan-voted award having secured it in Monaco for his podium finish there. Hi European Grand Prix podium brought him equal to the legendary Mexican driver Pedro Rodriguez and went a very long way to settling the team into 5th in the Constructors’ championship.
The other impressive new from the race was the record-equalling pit stop pulled off by Williams who clocked a 1.92s effort and that equals Red Bull’s record from 2013. The team worked very hard at perfecting their pit stops and have been the fastest in the first 8 races of the season.
An incredibly impressive effort from Williams and Force India’s Sergio Perez who added some color to a rather dull race in Baku.
I’ve been becoming more and more impressed with Sergio lately. And not just the last few races, but over the last two years he’s really seemed to find himself as a driver.
I was sold on him when he did his first Monaco for Sauber. He was awesome in that race and yes, he crashed at chicane and was out the next race but you could see it then. You could see his skill clearly.
There may not have been many changes of position at the front, but watching drivers going through the fast sweeping bends (170-180 mph) with such low downforce levels between very solid barriers is far from dull in my opinion. As Vettel said on the podium interview, you need to be well equipped around there.
