Renault’s Ghosn Meets With Briatore

Autoweek says that Renault boss Carlos Ghosn has called F1 team boss Flavio Briatore back to Paris today for a meeting regarding the allegations of race-fixing the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. If Autoweek’s sources are correct, it seems that Renault could be building a redoubt against the allegations as well as legal considerations against the Piquet’s for damaging Renault’s reputation with the charges.

The Story also said that sources close to the situation implied that the Renault board is supportive of Briatore and are standing by the Italian in this debacle. There is no question that the backlash from these stories have caused a PR nightmare for Renault over the last 11 days. Briatore and Renault have said very little publicly and it is a daunting task ahead of them with the World Motor Sport Council meeting as well as continuing to race and repair the public relations damage caused.

I am assuming the Renault’s board members are as astute and capable of doing their own due diligence on an issue and for this reason they must feel fairly confident that there was no wrongdoing on their part and that this is simply a case of a mentally unstable, disgruntled ex-employee. They may be right but if they are wrong, the damage may just be starting for Renault.

On the flip side of that coin; there is no positive outcome for the Piquet’s no matter the verdict. Either they are being disingenuous about the event or they are telling the truth but the choice between being a liar or a man of little integrity is something that will haunt them for some time to come.
