Rosberg: Can’t afford mistakes

Sorry if this seems like a somewhat self-explanatory statement to report on, but could it be a veiled request from Nico to his potential future employer?

Nico Rosberg has said that Williams will need an error-free weekend if it wants to secure its first podium of the season. Rosberg has grabbed six consecutive points finishes, and has only failed to score points twice this year.

Yet Rosberg – a subject of major silly season speculation – says that the team won’t perform beyond its fourth place in Hungary (and Germany), without running a perfect race. The whole story is here on

“From a team perspective, Hungary was another positive weekend,” mused the 24-year-old. “I had a bit of a messy start to the race, and I had to work hard to claw back positions after the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems) cars just flew past me off the line.

“I’d gained my fifth place grid slot back before the end of the first lap and then progressed to fourth in the stops, which is where I finished the race. We had the opportunity to fight [Kimi] Raikkonen for second, but we made some mistakes. We need to iron those out if we’re to make the most of our pace and start getting on the podium.”

It has been a strange season for Williams. They look faster now than ever since losing the BMW engines, and yet last season Rosberg got to spray the champagne in Melbourne and Singapore, even though he scored 8.5 fewer points in all of 2008 than so far this year.

Then again, fifth in the driver’s championship is no bad place to be. Choosing a team for next season will be tough for Nico, but at least he’s in demand. What would you advise? And can he get that podium?
