Rosberg claims pole for Japanese Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg claimed pole position just ahead of his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, and Williams F1 driver Valtteri Bottas. After a DNF in Singapore, Rosberg needed to bounce back and claiming pole is a good start.

Q1 saw Romain Grosjean and his teammate, Pastor Maldonado, eliminated by a last-breath effort from the Suaber’s of Gutierrez and Sutil. It also saw Marcus Ericsson lurch ahead of his teammate, local hero Kamui Kobayashi, and both Marussia cars to start 19th.

Q2 seemed to expose a lack of pace from both Red Bull cars in the early running with Vettel and Ricciardo in 9th and 10th. Ricciardo would eventually finish Q2 in 7th and Vettel in 10th. Jean-Eric Vergne also out-qualified the new Red Bull replacement for Vettel in Q2.

Q3 was all Mercedes with Nico Rosberg claiming pole position. I notice the “elderly F1 fan” slightly grumpy looking and a slight shake of the head when the camera switched to him immediately after Lewis crossed the line and managed only 2nd. Hmmmm.
