Rosberg signs 2-year deal with Mercedes

It’s a done deal…Mercedes has two more years of Nico Rosberg to navigate as he now joins his teammate with a signed 2-year deal. This means that the Nico vs Lewis Hamilton battle will live on within Mercedes for another two years. Mercedes said:

“We are delighted to announce that the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team has signed a two-year contract extension with Nico Rosberg for the 2017 and 2018 F1 seasons.

Nico has been a core member of the Silver Arrows since the team returned to the sport in 2010 and has played a crucial role in the team’s success in that time.

He has scored 19 Grand Prix wins and 25 pole positions so far withMercedes-Benz and is currently leading the Drivers’ World Championship.”

It would be hard for the team to let the current championship leader go. Despite the tensions between the drivers Rosberg does still obey team instructions (Monaco) when he is slower than Hamilton.

Despite Wehrlein’s promise, it is doubtful that he could better Rosberg’s performance without also causing further problems between the drivers.

Rosberg and Hamilton remain a formidable driver line up. The pace gap between them in qualifying has been only a couple of tenths for three seasons, and they have made the most of a dominant team and car to win Mercedes three WCC’s.
Provided the team can keep the rivalry between the drivers under control, Mercedes have probably given themselves the strongest chance of maintaining their dominance for another two seasons (until McLaren are ready to win again).
