After a terrific season opener; we now know who might have been sandbagging a bit in the off-season; the boys in blue. What looked like a Ferrari victory turned brilliant for Renault as Fernando wins the first round of the 2006 championship.
My thoughts have to follow the majority when I say it looks to be a good year with more than two teams battling for top spot. Ferrari seems to be back with the short-stint tire rule and Williams are a pleasant surprise although not unwarranted.
Hats off to Nico for fast lap and a brilliant debut drive as well as for Christian Klien who finished ahead of his uber-experienced teammate and in the points. The drive of the race has to go to Kimi for starting dead last and finishing on the podium. It is performances like this that support my theory of a Kimi WC run this year or next depending on who will give him a reliable, competitive car. Brilliant. It also exposes his teammate JPM in the process.
The new qualifying rules seemed to work well and provided an exciting view and was better than I expected. In all; a great race and should prove a terrific start to a good year.
