Sir Frank Williams 1942 – 2021

A very sad day in Formula 1 with the announcement of the passing of Sir Frank Williams. The team released a comment via social media saying:

It is with great sadness that on behalf of the Williams family, the team can confirm the death of Sir Frank Williams CBE, Founder and Former Team Principal of Williams Racing, at the age of 79.

The sport of Formula 1 is littered with iconic names who have shaped the series into what it is today. Sir Frank was among those legends of the sport. Williams was a unique character in the paddock fighting alongside other privateers such as Ron Dennis, Ken Tyrrell, Peter Sauber, Paul Stoddart, and many others. Sir Frank was a step above the average “garagista” in that his determination delivered world championships and some of the sport most legendary drivers.

Sir Frank was an enigma and had a singular focus on motorsport. He was a racer at heart and while he may not have the resources of the larger teams in the later iterations of Williams F1, he did manage to create a legacy that still carries his name.

Sir Frank took his role as a constructor in F1 very seriously and beat some of the largest names in the sport with his own chassis and design. Teamed with Patrick Head, Sir Frank dominated the sport coming from young engineer upstart to a world-class team with the sport’s biggest drivers.

“We are filled with the most immense and deep sadness at the passing of Sir Frank Williams
His was a life driven by passion for motorsport; his legacy is immeasurable, and will be forever part of F1
To know him was an inspiration and privilege
He will be deeply, deeply missed”

Indeed, he will be deeply missed as a legend of the sport. When you consider men like Sir Frank, Colin Chapman, Ken Terrell, Ron Dennis, Bernie Ecclestone, Max Mosley and others, they created the sport that F1 is today and in the case of many who have passed, sadly now including sir Frank, there is a large part of F1 that has passed with them. The stories, the history, the passion…it all falls silent.

Our deepest condolences to the Williams family for their loss and we thank them and honor the legend that is their father, Sir Frank Williams…the racer.

Deepest sympathies to the Williams family in the loss of Sir Frank. More than just a racer, but an excellent example of not letting the negative of this life hold you back. A true inspiration!

One of the greats during an era of giants.
