Ultimate Motorsport’s Barry Walsh told Autosport that they are in talks with Scuderia Toro Rosso for a potential buyout. The British F3 team has had a race victory at Snetterton last weekend. This does bring up a question of how realistic is it for Walsh to purchase an F1 team? Do they have the capital to not only purchase the team but maintain the team and operating costs associated with it? Surely they are aware they will be designing their own chassis for 2009?
According to Autosport, Walsh is in the final stages of putting together a very serious offer. Time will tell. Spyker? Midland-Toyota? Then again, Eddie Jordan did a good job while he was in F1.
I don’t mean to pour cold water on this because i do hope a new team will come. I am just worried about the lifespan of a team with one victory in British F3 but then again, this former Junior Irish Champion and, more recently, Formula Palmer Audi ace knows something about racing and perhaps he could be the new breed of privateer with some serious Irish backing. I am hoping so; I’m already a fan of the team for the attempt.
“We are in negotiations so I can’t reveal too much about it until everything is final,” he said.
“We always set out with Formula One as the target. I would only have got involved in the project in the first place if I was confident we could take it all the way to F1, that is the aim.
“If our plans go the right way, I’d like to think we could be on the grid for 2009. The aim is to have the whole structure, with the academy from karting, through Formula Three and the World Series, and Formula One at the top.”
