Verizon Wireless announced today that they will serve as the primary sponsor for Juan Pablo Montoya for 8 races this season as well as being the primary sponsor for Will Power. Additionally, Verizon Wireless will be the primary sponsor for Helio Castroneves at the Inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis, much reminiscent of the Marlboro days when all 3 Penske cars shared the Marlboro colors.
“Verizon has been a terrific partner for Team Penske and we are excited to continue to grow our relationship with them in 2014 and beyond,” team boss Roger Penske said in a release. “Verizon’s technology and marketing activation has meant so much to Team Penske and the sport of IndyCar racing and we look forward to building on this special partnership in the future.”
Verizon’s presence in IndyCar racing extends back to 2009 when they served as the primary sponsor on Will Power’s car at Long Beach when Power was running with the Penske camp on a part time basis. Since joining Team Penske full time in 2010, the Verizon colors have graced the #12 car.
Penske has yet to announce a sponsor for the remaining 10 races Verizon will not sponsor the #2 car, but according to the Associated Press, Penske was prepared to pay for the team out of his own pocket of sponsorship could not be found.
