In keeping with the charming British weather theme, Saturday’s qualifying for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone was a mixed bag. The obligatory light English rain starting and stopping offered a drying and dampening circuit in Q1 but like all storms over England, the clouds parted and the sun made its entrance in Q3 and offered a slightly unorthodox starting grid.
While it may have been hard to deny Max Verstappen pole position, the real action happened in the final laps of Q3 with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri putting their McLaren’s in P2 and P3 respectively. A great result for a team that needed some redemption from where they started the season at.
Perhaps the track flattered the McLaren’s a bit but new upgrades may also be to blame for their reversal or performance putting them among the leaders for best-of-the-rest. An inspired drive by hometown hero, Lando, had the British crowd cheering for a British driver not named Lewis Hamilton.
As exciting as that was, George Russell was the other British driver putting his Mercedes in P6 ahead of the veteran Lewis Hamilton which means the three British drivers will all start in the top 7 places on Sunday.
If that wasn’t good news enough for British fans, The Williams of Alex Albon was also in the top 8 with an incredibly performance from a car that’s really come on strong int eh last two races.
