Verstappen wins 3rd championship as Piastri wins Qatar Sprint

Oscar Piastri took his first win in Saturday’s Qatar Sprint race for McLaren while Max Verstappen finished second giving him his third World Championship in a row. The duo were followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris in third place.

The Sprint was addled by two Safety Car periods that sprinkled some spice onto the race while a few cars started on the Soft compound tires which gave them an early advantage only to be lost when their tires faded.

Max Verstappen has won his third world championship in a row and the Red Bull team have been fantastic all year. As any team who has won a title will tell you, it isn’t easy and doing it three times on the two is even less easy.

While many bemoan the domination, I find the performance fantastic just as Mercedes enjoyed 8 titles in a row with Lewis Hamilton securing seven of those. This kind of performance is amazing and should be respected for what it is.

I’ve enjoyed seeing Red Bull topple Mercedes in the past couple years and as a Ferrari fan, I would hope to see them topple Red Bull but if I’m honest, McLaren may look to challenge that given their pace late in 2023. Also, Red Bull I am sure have no designs or lifting their foot off the neck of the sport either.

A big congratulations to the entire Red Bull team for both constructors and driver’s championships! A big congratulations to Oscar Piastri for his maiden win in Formula 1.

Now, don’t take you’re eye off the ball, the big battles for 2nd through 10th in both contractor’s and driver’s championships is a very tight affair and should provide a lot of excitement for the balance of the season.
