Friday’s second practice session went off without a hitch…that is unless you’re Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. Vettel struggled with car problems that left him sitting in the garage for most of the practice session but he stormed back with only nine laps run to leap to the top of the time sheets with a 1:37:718.
His teammate, Mark Webber, looked strong as well as he finished 2nd in the session with a 1:38:475. While Vettel sat out, it was up to mark to pound out over 30 laps to gain valuable data about the new Circuit of the Americas (COTA) and he did that in spades. Vettel was still pushing the limits of the circuit to find the sweet spot between tire and tarmac in the waning seconds of the session witha brief off.
As for the nearest challenger in the World Championship, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso ran a strong third (1:38:483) followed by McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. Williams Pastor Maldonado had a bit of a moment when a small fire appeared ont he rear of the car and the team instructed him to shut the engine off.
A great day of racing and I must say that the crowd was terrific. A great turnout for Friday’s practice session.
