We were discussing Pastor Maldonado here and the issue of pay drivers. While the concept of drivers paying for their rides is perhaps more invasive in Formula one than in past years, it has been around for a long time.
Ayrton Senna raised cash to buy rides in junior formula’s and this video from 1976 also shows what James Hunt did to get into racing. Besides having to raise sponsorship to cover the costs of his racing aspirations, he went on to win the world championship shortly after this video was made so it paid off for him. For others, it’s a black hole that sucks up cash with little or no return other than memories.
Besides the paying driver issue, the interview is a nice one and a real trip down memory lane as it were.
