Not to be outdone by Team Sebastien over at Scuderia Toro Rossol Williams F1 is looking to add Nico Hulkenberg tot heir list of potential drivers for 2010. With rumors placing an impending exit from current driver Nico Rosberg at the doorstep of Williams this year, Hulkenberg is a driver who could help Williams keep its Nico quota for 2010.
Hulkenberg is the current GP2 leader and could win the title in Monza next week. He is also Williams F1’s test driver and has long been considered for a seat at the team. He is managed by Willi Webber of Mcihael Schumacher fame. Williams technical director Sam Michael said:
“Nico is someone that is on our list for a drive next year,” said Michael. “But there are lots of drivers knocking on our door.
“It’s a point of discussion internally at the moment and we need to come to a decision in the coming weeks or months. We have a long-term contract and we have to decide whether to engage that or not.”
With BMW leaving F1 and three new teams entering the sport in 2010, there have been a lot of drivers looking for homes. Robert Kubica, Nick heidfeld, Jarno Trulli, Giancarlo Fisichella, Pedro de la Rosa, Anthony Davidson, Christian Klien, Antonio Liuzzi, Bruno Senna, Nelson Piquet Jnr and Sebastien Bourdais just to name a few. yes, I left out JV as I am not sure he is still interested in a ride in F1 what with all the NASCAR success this past weekend and all.
It is rumored that Williams F1 is also looking to part ways with long-time engine provider toyota and that rings the rumor phone on whether Kazuki Nakajima will have a ride at the team next year as well. Ultimately there could be two seats open and Williams if Nico Rosberg leaves and the team kick Toyota and Nakajima to the curb (KERB).
