If you’ve been following the Group Lotus, Proton DRB Hicom saga, then you’ll know that there are many questions remaining from the sale of Proton. Namely, what is going to happen to Lotus? It seems marketing guru Dany bahar has been suspended from Lotus according to an official statement:

“Group Lotus plc (“Lotus”) can today confirm that, following an operational review, chief executive Dany Bahar has been temporarily suspended from his role to facilitate an investigation into a complaint about his conduct made by Lotus’ penultimate parent company, DRB-Hicom Berhad,” the statement said.

DRB Hicom purchased Proton, parent company of Group Lotus, and you’ll recall that Lotus officially withdrew their sponsorship from the Lotus F1 team several weeks ago. This had some fans wondering if Genii Capital were going to outright buy Group Lotus and Gerard Lopez, Genii principle, was not discounting that idea.

If Geniii Captial were to purchase Group Lotus, one wonders if the car company would re-engage F1 as a brand and marketing platform or would it recoil and focus on making cars. The comedy, and there is very little in a person losing his job, is that the name war between Tony Fernandes had to cost a small fortune and agree or disagree, perhaps that war did more to secure the rights of the Lotus name in the world of motor sport than anything else. My hunch? Dany will head east…to the middle east or far east to find a high-profile marketing position in which to ply his skills but to be honest, GM has an extra $10m laying around now that it pulled its Facebook advertising. Why not look there Dany?  Corvette is a terrific brand in Le Mans and ALMS.

It blew my mind that Proton hired Bahar in the first place, and this turn of events is no surprise. Why any company would ever hire Bahar again is just beyond me. He has a history of talking big, spending other people’s money, and failing miserably.

I have to apologize because I have nothing to back this up. I read something somewhere someyears ago that colored my opinion of Bahar, but I can’t find it or any other evidence for my distaste. So don’t take my word for it.

As soon as they decided to go upmarket and make heavier more luxurious cars I kind of lost interest in Lotus. Not my 1965 Elan tho.

At this point, I can’t see where Bahar leaving would do anything but good for the company…he seemed intent on making it into something that not has it never been, but that few people were interested in it being.

And I now he’s publicly said that he’s not interested, but imagine the irony if Fernandes were to step in buy the company in order to keep it from being sold to some Chinese outfit. There seem to worse ways that this situation could work out…

I see a bright future for him in the used car department.

Did lotus ever get to release any bigger, heavier cars? i know they had a few in the pipeline but all i’ve seen is a streched exige with a v6. Im sure a NSX-sized esprit will come along, but thats really not as sacrilege as it could be. Damage averted if you asked me. Now start paying evil lotus again, they need the money!
