Former Mexican, Haas Formula One driver, Esteban Gutierrez has been confirmed to drive the No.18 Sonny’s BBQ Dale Coyne Racing Honda during the upcoming double-header Chevrolet Grand Prix of Detroit.
Gutierrez, of course, competed in F1 for Sauber and later with Haas F1 in a race capacity. He’s also spent time in the F1 paddock as a test driver working with both Ferrari and Sauber. He’s currently competing full time in Formula E with Techeetah.
The opportunity for Gutierrez to race in Indycar has arisen as a result of Sebastien Bourdais being absent from the field due to his injuries sustained in qualifying ahead of the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500. James Davison stood in for Sebastien at Indy during the race, and it is still to be determined who will stand in for the remainder of Sebastien’s absence whilst he is recovering from his injuries.
The double header weekend at Belle Isle will see race one on Saturday afternoon, followed by the second race on Sunday, both are set for 330pm ET on ABC.
I sort of figured he’d end up in an Indycar at some point. He better watch it, though. Start throwing stuff around an Indycar pit and he’s liable to get more than an arm grabbing and firm talking to!
