Lorenzo win forces title decision to final race

A sublime ride from Jorge Lorenzo ensures that the title decider will go to Spain for the season finale. Yamaha’s Lorenzo reminded everyone why he is the reigning world champion buy fending off the charging Honda’s of Mar Marquez and Dani Pedrosa at the home the Honda built for the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi.

As we head to Spain for the closer, the standings are:

1. Marc Marquez (Spain) Honda 318
2. Jorge Lorenzo (Spain) Yamaha 305
3. Dani Pedrosa (Spain) Honda 280
4. Valentino Rossi (Italy) Yamaha 224
5. Cal Crutchlow (Britain) Yamaha 188
6. Alvaro Bautista (Spain) Honda 160
7. Stefan Bradl (Germany) Honda 146
8. Andrea Dovizioso (Italy) Ducati 133
9. Nicky Hayden (U.S.) Ducati 118
10. Bradley Smith (Britain) Yamaha 107
11. Aleix Espargaro (Spain) Aprilia 88
12. Andrea Iannone (Italy) Ducati 57
13. Michele Pirro (Italy) Ducati 50
14. Colin Edwards (U.S.) FTR 40
15. Randy de Puniet (France) Aprilia 36

A Lorenzo win in Spain means that Marquez can finish in the top 5 and still claim the 2013 title and while he’s the favorite to do so, Lorenzo proved that Sachsenring or Assen were the arguable differences in what could have been another title. Either way, unlike the Formula 1 season, MotoGP will take teh final fight to the final race and crown a champion.

Lorenzo damn sure isn’t letting this title go quietly. I thought Marquez had something for him — heck, he was close enough to literally push him over at one point! — but I guess he realized he had best just settle back and take 2nd. Better than than to pull an Alonso and DNF in 2 straight races and kill your title chances.
